How to Monetize Your Site Without Causing an Audience Revolt | Copyblogger

image of riot police

If you haven’t experienced it, you’ve seen it.

Whether you’re a blogger or a marketer — or both — you’ve seen an audience rise up in revolt the moment someone tries to make a buck.

You’ve sold out! You didn’t disclose!

Whatever the contention, one thing is clear. Something backfired and backfired hard.

Nobody likes having to tip-toe around the fact that you’re in this to make money. Many bloggers end up groveling to their readers by low-balling prices for any product they release.

It is a real shame, too, because there are so many bloggers out there with very large audiences who find themselves incapable or unwilling to monetize by launching a product.

So, this raises a few questions:

  • How do you avoid this issue altogether?
  • How do you prepare your audience for your prices?
  • How can you charge higher prices for your products?

Reciprocity — with a cap

All experienced marketers know about the power of reciprocity. Give a bunch of stuff away and the prospect feels more obliged to give back. Sounds great.

You can, however, take it too far.

As a young father, I’ve learned that you lead by example. If I go around cursing in front of my little girl, all of a sudden she’s going to think that’s normal. Then other parents look at me weird and that’s not much fun.

The same goes for our blog audience.

It’s about establishing a pattern. If your pattern is nothing but free-free-free, then the minute you try to make a buck, it’s like a rock thrown into a cool, calm pond. It disrupts the pattern.

On the flip side, no content marketer can pull off a steady diet of sell-sell-sell. We members of the Third Tribe know that we need to do both. We’re always looking for that perfect balance. We play in the middle ground.

With your blog audience, it is important to show that you’re here to sell as well as to provide valuable free content. That means getting out in front of your audience with an offer of some kind.

Establish a pattern of free-free-free-sell, free-free-free-sell.

Many bloggers have asked me when the right time to monetize is. I always tell them: early.

It doesn’t matter if your audience is small. You want to establish a pattern and you want to do it early in the game.

The Starbucks lesson

If all you ever offer are $7 e-books, you position yourself as a person with low-end products.

In other words, you’re Wal-Mart. And high-end stuff doesn’t usually do well in a Wal-Mart aisle.

So, should you just increase your prices?

Well, yeah! However, you’ll be able to give a powerful “reason why” if you get out in front of the objection and provide a point of positioning.

How does Starbucks get away with charging $3 for a cup of coffee? They did it by re-defining the coffee experience. Instead of walking into a fast-food joint, they’ve provided a nice communal atmosphere with music.

They don’t even have small, medium and large sizes. That’s too similar to fast-food chains and would defeat their positioning. So they borrowed words from the Italian language, and now we routinely ask for “venti” coffees, even at other coffee shops.

How can you change your positioning on your blog? Good design and professional graphics will help provide the right atmosphere. But you can do more.

Offer consulting. Almost anybody in any niche can offer some kind of consulting option on their blog. Even if you’re into underwater basketweaving, you can offer 1-on-1 help to pick just the right pond to dive into for your next basket.

Set your price a bit on the high side. Right now, you’re not really interested if anybody takes you up on it. You just want that offer out there so that (a) it shows people that not all of your expertise is free, and (b) it gives a point of comparison for determining prices for your other offers.

If you charge $100/hour for consulting, then offering a product for $97 starts to look like a bargain. After all, the buyer gets all that information for less than the cost of an hour of time. And the value is real.

Blogging with a strategy in mind

If you want to make money, you need to establish your value.

Many bloggers are great at building up traffic, but establishing their own value seems to fall by the wayside.

So do all the good social media stuff. Provide seriously awesome content. Help people like crazy. Connect with them. Interact.

But . . .

While you’re making all those connections, establish your value. Let them know you’re there to do business, and that you aren’t cheap. Do it with confidence and without apology.

When you do that, you set the stage for them to know, like, and trust you. And then the game is yours to win.

Looking for that balance between connection and doing business? That’s what the Third Tribe is all about. If the idea intrigues you, check it out today, because the price goes up on June 1.

Search Update: Why Rich Media Content Drives Results | Social Media Marking Blog

Go ahead, try climbing the wall…..but first, learn the new rules.

I give full credit to HubSpot’s Website Grader newsletter for this post. www.websitegrader.com. This free tool gives you a peek inside the rules of SEO and the newsletter stays on the cutting edge of new Google developments. Thanks, HubSpot, for validating the guiding prinicple of Social Media Beast– CONTENT MATTERS, A LOT!

Google first announced a new kind of search – universal, or blended, search – back in 2007 that, in addition to text-based results (web pages), would integrate different kinds of results such as video, images, and news, just to name a few, and in late 2009 Google added “real time search” integrating updates from Twitter and social media sites into search results.
There are a few clear implications of universal search results for businesses who want to better optimize their web presence for this new search landscape.
1) New Real Estate
Before universal search, SEO (search engine optimization) was all about creating remarkable content that people would link to and would be optimized for certain keywords so that your web pages would show up as one of those top 10 search results (the first page). But now, those 10 spots are cut down to 9, 8, 7, or fewer. Some of that old real estate is now reserved for different kinds of content across the web – video, images, etc. – that are on their own ranking algorithm.
There are new opportunities to get on that first page of search results, and businesses need to create multimedia content to take advantage of this new real estate. That means posting videos to YouTube, photos to Flickr, and tagging this multimedia content as thoroughly as possible.
2) More Emphasis on Top Search Results
With these new, visually appealing, search results part way down the first page of search results, there is now a visual barrier that focuses users’ eyes even more on the top of the search results page. We already know from eye tracking heat map analysis that users focus on the “golden triangle” (planted in the top left hand corner of the SERP) and few people scroll to the bottom of the page or go on to the second, third, etc. SERP.
It’s very possible that this multimedia will continue to focus users’ eyes on the top of the first SERP, so your website better be one of the first search results.
3) How Do You Convert Viewers of Multimedia?
Creating content is the absolute best way to attract more prospects to learn about and engage with your brand – on your website as well as social media sites like Twitter, YouTube, or Flickr. But how are you supposed to turn YouTube video views into leads and sales for your business? With this new SERP real estate going to multimedia content, this issue has become even more pressing.
For all of your multimedia, give people a way to further engage with your company, whether it’s by including a link to your website or relevant blog article in the video/image/etc. description, or including your logo or call to action within the multimedia.
4) Are You Listening to Your Customers?
This multimedia content is yet another way for content written about you by you, your customers, or fans, to bubble to the top of search results. While you may not yet have posted any multimedia about your company, your customers are most definitely already talking about you online, in a variety of ways and mediums.
Universal search results make it that much more important for you to listen and engage with your customers online, so that you know what they’re saying, and so that you can promote flattering content and respond to negative criticism.

Girls are Facebook junkies, study finds - Yahoo! News

Tired of Facebook mania dominating the news? ">Blame it on the girls, at least http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/education/10121931.stm">according to a study undertaken for the U.K.’s National Family Week, which found that the social networking site has become one of the most important things in their lives.

We’re talking about fairly young girls, ages 8 to 15. Forty percent of these precious lasses listed Facebook among the "most important things" in their lives, according to BBC News' report on the study. Only 6 percent of boys said that. And technology in general was cited by 41 percent of girls as a major influence in life, compared with 17 percent of boys. So much for stereotypes about tech being male-oriented.

Another stereotype-twister: Boys were more likely than girls to name family as one of the most important things in their lives (73 percent to 53 percent).

The top three influences for girls: parents, teachers and technology. For boys: parents, friends and school. The study polled 1,000 kids.

But the BBC News story doesn't cast social networking sites as isolating or as destructive to relationships; rather, it suggests Facebook and its kind might be more like family complements, indistinguishable from girls' real-world interactions with parents and friends — "central to their social and family life."

One thing, at least, remains the same: Parents just don't understand (in the immortal words of Will Smith). The survey suggested that parents tend to underestimate how important tech is to their kids — and overestimate how important they themselves are to their kids.

Calorie restriction: longer life, fewer memories? - Holy Kaw!

Decreasing calorie intake and tweaking the activity of the hormone insulin are two methods long known to increase lifespan in a wide range of organisms. Now, biologists have uncovered evidence that these life-extending mechanisms have a range of effects on learning and memory.

Biologists at Princeton University looked at the effects of caloric restriction on cognitive function in roundworms and found that restricting calories impaired long-term memory in early adulthood. But surprisingly, the worms did not suffer further memory reduction with age, suggesting that caloric restriction may guard against memory loss over time.

In contrast, the worms with reduced insulin signaling demonstrated improved long-term memory performance in early adulthood and maintained learning ability better with age. However, these worms were not protected against age-related declines in long-term memory.

Creating Powerful Promotional Marketing

The Promotion Trends Report by Promo Magazine, revealed that promotional marketing was part of an overall marketing strategy for over two-thirds of all firms. The line is blurring between advertising and promotions budgets. This signals a strong trend of businesses adding promotional marketing to their overall advertising budget.

What is Promotional Marketing?

Promotional marketing is a business marketing strategy designed to stimulate a customer to take action towards a buying decision. Promotional marketing is a technique that includes various incentives to buy such as:

  • Contests: We all enjoy winning something for free. Contests offer an attractive marketing vehicle for small business to acquire new clients and create awareness. You don't need to run a billion dollar giveaway like Pepsi, just a valuable prize to your target market.
  • Coupons: According to CMS, a leading coupon processing agent, marketers issued 302 billion coupons in 2007, a 6% increase over the previous year. Over 76% of the population use coupons, according to the Promotion Marketing Association (PMA) Coupon Council. Coupons still work and provide an affordable marketing strategy for small business.
  • Sampling: Do free samples work? Giving your product away for free may seem profit limiting but consider the case of Seth Godin. Godin released a book called "The Idea Virus" in 2000. Unlike other authors, he did not charge for the book instead gave it away for free as an e-book. In less than 30 days over 400,000 copies were downloaded. This created a buzz about the book and even through free, people bought the hard cover; making the book #5 on the Amazon best seller list.
  • Creating Powerful Promotional Marketing

Before starting a promotional marketing campaign for your small business take the time to carefully plan the incentives and objectives. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Are you planning to collect names as leads or discount an item as a loss leader to gain a larger customer base? Determine the reason for the promotion.
  • Who is the target of your promotional campaign? Is it your competitors customers or existing clients who have not made a purchase in the last 12 months?
  • What incentive works best for your customer group? Coupons, sweepstakes or sampling?
  • What is your available budget? Choose an advertising vehicle like direct mail, email, or in-store that will not exceed your promotional budget.
  • Will you run the promotion in-house or hire an outside promotional agency? Choose in-house if you have a limited budget and time to learn more about promotional marketing.
  • How will your business decide if promotional marketing is a success? Select a clear goal and do not forget to measure the results.

  • Is your promotion in compliance with State and Federal laws. Promotional marketing incentives must comply with the law. For instance, the Federal Trade Commission states "when a "free" offer is tied to the purchase of another product, the price of the purchased product should not be increased from its regular price."
  • Any contests or sweepstakes offered by a company that require a purchase to enter are illegal in the United States. Check your country or state government agency to make sure you comply with regulations and laws.

The continued spending by small and large companies on promotional marketing is a clear indication that promos work. Apply promotional marketing to your small business and experience a sales boost.

    Some great marketing ideas.

29 Ways to Collect Email Addresses for Your Business

    Picture 2

There are a ton of ways to get people to sign up for your email marketing offers. I've put together a list for you to read, so you know all of the ways you can be growing your list.

    1. Put an offer on the back of your business cards to get people to sign up for your newsletter.
    2. Tradeshows - Bring a clipboard or sign-up book with you to tradeshows and ask for permission to send email to those who sign up.
    3. Include a newsletter sign-up link in your signature of all of your emails.
    4. Send an opt-in email to your address book asking them to join your list.
    5. Join your local chamber of commerce, email the member list (if it's opt-in) about your services with a link to sign up to your newsletter.
    6. Host your own event - Art galleries, software companies (one here has a party every quarter and invites the neighboring businesses), retail shops, consultants (lunch & learn) can all host an event and request attendees to sign up.
    7. Offer a birthday club where you give something special to people who sign up.
    8. Incentivize your employees - Give them $ for collecting VALID email addresses.
    9. Giving something for free like a PDF? Make visitors sign up to your opt-in form before you let them download it.
    10. Referrals - Ask you customers to refer you, and in exchange you'll give them a discount.
    11. Bouncebacks – Get them back! - Send a postcard or call them asking for their updated email address.
    12. Trade newsletter space with a neighboring business, include a link for their opt-in form and ask them to include yours in their newsletter.
    13. SEO - Make sure you optimize your site for your keywords. You need to be at the top of the natural search when people are looking for your products or services.
    14. Giveaways - Send people something physical and ask for their email address as well as their postal address.
    15. Do you have a postal list without emails? Send them a direct mail offer they can only get if they sign up to your email list.
    16. Include opt-in forms on every page on your site.
    17. Popup windows - When someone attempts to leave your site, pop up a window and ask for the email address.
    18. Include a forward-to-a-friend link in your emails just in case your recipient wants to forward your content to someone they think will find it interesting.
    19. Include a forward-to-a-friend on every page of your site.
    20. Offer a community - Use Ning as your easy-to-set-up community and have your visitors interact and sign up for your newsletter.
    21. Offer "Email only" discounts and don't use those offers anywhere but email.
    22. Telemarketing - If you've got people on the phone, don't hang up until you ask if you can add them to your newsletter.
    23. Put a fishbowl on your counter and do a weekly prize giveaway of your product - then announce it to your newsletter. Add everyone who put their card in on to your newsletter list.
    24. Include an opt-in form inside your emails for those people who get your email forwarded to them.
    25. Tradeshows - Collect business cards and scan them into a spreadsheet. Make sure you ask permission to send email to them, then mark the card.
    26. Use Facebook - Host your own group and invite people to it, then post new links often. From time to time, post a link to sign up for your newsletter.
    27. Use Facebook - Post the hosted link from your newsletter into Linked Items to spread the word.
    28. Use Facebook - Include an opt-in form on your Facebook Fan page.
    29. Use Twitter - Twitter the hosted link of your email campaign every time you launch.

I tend to agree that #17 is not the greatest method, but is still one to consider if you provide super offers like "get half price if you sign up now" or something very hard to resist.

These are really informative ways for colleciting the email addresses, i always bought the business and casual email addresses on thousand of dollars, which was nothing but the waste of the money, great idea and nice article, keep on going.

Very well organized list. #17 has been out of favor for over 7 years now.

Comprehensive list. I've started using these in my one on one consultation with my clients.

There is however one thing that is new in the market that is worth considering to be added to the list - a wireless handheld from Sterizon for collecting email addresses for physical store-fronts businesses (like restaurants, spa etc) instead of paper opt-in cards or fishbowls.

Yea, #17 may not go well with your online visitors.

Thanks for the suggestions. As the internet gets older we're coming to realize that interaction with clients is as important online as it is offline.

nice list, but i question how to do #5.
"Join your local chamber of commerce, email the member list (if it's opt-in) about your services with a link to sign up to your newsletter."

i have asked just about every ESP if we could do this, but they won't let me send an opt-in email because the recipients did not opt-in previously to my list. are you saying verticalresponse allows this?

sign me up! and please elaborate.

    Ralph,
As leader of a company that specializes in helping non-profits Market and increase their visibility and support, I understand your dilemma. However, though I don't know your organization, the name implies that you have quite a bit to "give away" to people and businesses who are interested in the Green and Renewable energy movements. This is hot right now as you probably know and being associated with Green is big. I would focus on creating proprietary information that those you meet could not get easily or at all except from you. For example, Publish "The 5 things your small business can do this month to save $1000," and make it available via email. Do you do presentations, workshops, consultations? Offer free admission when someone signs up at your web site.

Certainly knowing more about your org. would allow me to provide more detailed advice.

    Good luck on the launch.

Nice long list. Now the big question . . . which ones create opt-in names that will actually read your stuff?

    Katherine -

A ning community would take a bit of a commitment. But if you marketed it properly and at a minimum monitored what was going on it could be very beneficial to your business. It is an additional way to engage your audience and keep you top of mind as well as generate leads.

    Delayne -

To add an opt-in link to your signature, you first need to create a form. (Here are tips on how to do that using VR http://help.verticalresponse.com/site/index/opt-in_forms/)

After it is set up make sure you click the submit button at the bottom, that way a window will pop up that provides you with a URL for you to include in your email signature.

Great list! I used it to measure what we've done over the years with our email campaigns and e-marketing. We've done nearly 20 of your 29 items!

Just enjoyed your suggestions on how to mine email. However, being a non profit we do not have products nor services to give away to entice someone to give up their email.

Do yo have suggestions for public charity to start an email campaign, remember we are start-up with hardly a budget or a mailing list to do much of anything so this must be on a shoestring budget, if at all.

We are about to launch our website next month, but we are listed with Guidestar.

    About a ning community:

Won't adding the ning community do more harm than good if you do not tend it constantly (until and assuming it maintains enough participants) so that it stays "fresh and lively" and not "dead"/not enough people participating which makes your business look "unpopular"?

Include a newsletter sign-up link in your signature of all of your emails.
    How do I do this?
